| Introduction to Africa Services
Africa Services are one of the traditions of the Religious Action
Network. Religious leaders nationwide have held services focused
on Africa. These services raise critical issues facing the continent
and engage congregations in effective ways to take action. Africa
Action has included initial materials you could use to host an Africa
Service in this section of the website.
Africa Services are simply an opportunity to dedicate one service
to Africa. At some point each year we will invite you to focus an
Africa Service on a critical issue such as international debt or
the HIV/AIDS crisis. Africa Services can be as simple as setting
up a corner dedicated to Africa with postcards or another form of
action on the issue being highlighted. Often religious leaders will
incorporate religious teachings on justice into the sermon, and
tailor a prayer during the service to the issue of focus and the
need for justice for Africa. In some cases, congregations have not
only dedicated an entire service to Africa Service but they have
also held an educational event during the coffee hour or a special
scripture study session on the moral imperative to work for justice
in Africa. Browse the Religious Action Network section of our website
for sample bulletin inserts, prayers, music suggestions, liturgy
samples, scripture suggestions and sermon notes to support your
Africa Service.
Be sure to let us know if you hold an Africa Service and what type
of action your congregation takes on the issue. We will report back
to you on the success of this effort and share with you some of
the creative ideas that different congregations implemented as part
of Africa Services in an annual Religious Action Network mailing. |
