Campaign to Stop Genocide in Darfur

Five years since the genocide in Darfur began, over 450,000 people have died, millions have been displaced, and the conflict continues. A United Nations-led peacekeeping force was authorized in July 2007, but it has been tragically slow to deploy and ineffective at protecting civilians. Meanwhile, the 2005 Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) that ended Sudan’s North-South civil war is at risk of collapsing. U.S. efforts to address Sudan’s challenges have failed so far because of a lack of political will to take the necessary action and a pattern of looking at each conflict in isolation.

From September 2008 to March 2009, join Africa Action in a new, intensified campaign to raise awareness about the continuing crisis in Darfur and ensure that the next U.S. president leads the international community in bringing peace and justice to Darfur and all Sudan. In June, both Barack Obama and John McCain signed a pledge promising “unstinting resolve” to end genocide in Darfur. We need public pressure to ensure that whichever presidential candidate is elected keeps this promise.

The JUST L.E.A.D campaign not only calls for leadership from the U.S. government but also challenges all of us to meet our collective responsibility as ordinary individuals to LEARN. EDUCATE. and ACT. DAILY. on the most important moral and solidarity question of our time. Africa Action is working with other organizations to collect one million postcards urging the next president to make Sudan a priority on Day One and throughout his term.

Take action by signing the postcard now.

Genocide in Darfur

Since 2003, the government of Sudan has been waging a campaign of genocide against targeted African communities in Darfur.
More than 450,000 people have died as a result of the genocide in Darfur.
The growing violence has created a conflict-affected population of more than 4.5 million, according to estimates from the UN.
Some 210,000 people were displaced due to violence between January and July 2008.
Over a year after it was authorized on July 31, 2007, the United Nations-African Union hybrid peacekeeping force UNAMID has less than half its personnel in place in Darfur.

*These figures are compiled from the reports of Eric Reeves (www.sudanreeves.org) and the Coalition for International Justice (www.cij.org), as of the end of 2005.
